Fit your office into your life

Traffic doing your head in? Suzie from marketing always stopping by your desk when you’re drowning in work? Prefer working in your PJ's?

Working from home can be a great way to increase your productivity, and find a little work-life balance in the process.

Whether working from home full time, or just when a deadline is looming, your home office can be a place of inspiration and effectiveness – as long as you set it up right. Create a space that fits your life – one that makes you feel happy and motivated, that reflects your personality and is comfortable.

Here’s how to make working from home work for you:

Get equipped

Get your technology sorted - a reliable and fast internet connection, decent computer, and probably a good printer/scanner too.

Make sure everything’s at your finger tips – printer, spare ink and copy paper, staplers, calculators – whatever stationery essentials you regularly use, should be dedicated to your home office. You don’t want to be roaming the house trying to find the scissors that someone has “borrowed” for their art project.

Sort your storage – if you can have things like printers and stationery stowed away, they won’t feel so imposing or take up precious space.

Minimise the paper clutter with funky desk storage options.

Get comfortable

Claim your space - whether you’re setting up your home office at the kitchen bench, or in a dedicated room, consider what’s going to be the most practical for you.

Choose a desk - there are so many stylish options to choose from. Look for desks that also have storage capacity, to leave plenty of clear space for working.

Find your perfect chair - you’re going to be spending a lot of time in your chair, so choose a proper ergonomic desk chair - one that looks good, and is comfortable.

Spot some break out zones – whether it’s chairs around a table or just a comfy bean bag to kick back on when you’re reading through a long document, space away from your desk is important.

Get that feel-good factor

Let in the light - Try to set up your office in a room with good natural light – it’s even better when there’s a nice outlook! Natural light minimises eye fatigue and can also help keep your energy levels high – it’s often one of the main perks of working from home. And for days when the sun’s not shining, a funky desktop lamps can add some fun.

Stay warm (and cool) – it’s impossible to be efficient if you’re feeling the chill, or all you can think about is hitting the beach to cool off. Make sure you have a heater handy and natural ventilation to keep the air, and your thinking fresh.
