How we can help you become a fairtrade supporting workplace

In the current economic environment, businesses are struggling to justify spending money on sustainably sourced products.

Do you have sustainable procurement targets to achieve?

By regularly purchasing 2 or more Fairtrade ANZ products for your workplace, a business can gain Fairtrade Supporting Workplace certification. By choosing Fairtrade ANZ products, you’re telling your team and customers that you support an environmentally responsible and socially just world. It's leadership in its simplest form. "With the economy constantly in the headlines, businesses should integrate sustainability within their cost-cutting efforts and not forego their environmental and social commitments," says Senthil Nathan, the CEO of Fairtrade ANZ.

Senthil provides answers for why businesses should choose Fairtrade-certified products.

The cost of Fairtrade-certified tea or coffee is not significantly higher

It's a common misconception that the price of Fairtrade-marked products is exorbitant compared to other products in the market. Yes, the prices of Fairtrade-certified products are a little dearer, but if you analyse spending on an annual basis, the overall cost is only a fraction higher.

Assured fair price for farmers in a volatile climate

The farmers producing these products are the most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. With volatile weather looming all year round, a week of extra rain or drought can spoil months' worth of labour and drain them financially, with a long road to recovery.

With a Fairtrade minimum price, farmers are guaranteed a fair price for their produce, safeguarding them from poverty. Plus, you give them the integrity of being farmers who earn their due through trade, not aid.

Investment in Fairtrade supports the wider farming community

The premium paid via Fairtrade helps the farming community invest in long-standing issues, such as establishing a clean drinking water system for the village, providing education for underprivileged children, promoting good agricultural practices, and adapting to climate change.

Fairtrade's strong global credentials and impact

The Fairtrade mark is a globally recognised ethical label. In 2025, 1.9 million farmers and workers were helped in 71 countries. 30,000 Fairtrade products are available to shoppers around the world.

"Our few extra dollars on coffee beans can profoundly impact the lives of vulnerable smallholder producer communities," says Senthil.

"OfficeMax plays an integral role in being the channel to promote and sell Fairtrade-certified products to businesses and individuals in New Zealand. We are proud to be partners in promoting sustainability in businesses across Aotearoa, New Zealand," says Senthil.
