The Papanui High School staff gleamed when we installed a new coffee machine in their staffroom.
The simple yet powerful coffee machine brought back the hustle and bustle of the school staffroom left deserted by the COVID vacuum.
Christchurch's secondary education institution, Papanui High School, houses over 140 teaching and non-teaching staff. Post-Covid, getting the staff back into the school was a major goal. The school needed a collaborative and positive space for staff to take a break, relax and revitalise their spirits.
The Challenge
- The school's leadership team wanted to bring a positive work culture back to the staffroom.
- Encourage the staff to go to the staffroom and interact with different departments that were otherwise isolated in their own lunch-dining spaces.
- Conserve staff time and money as they would go offsite to buy coffee.
The Solution
Papanui High School Executive Officer Gaye Parlane contacted their OfficeMax Account Manager, Tasha Dore, to explore options that would help improve staff wellbeing. Tasha suggested a café solution and engaged Caroline Sutherland, OfficeMax Café Specialist, to provide coffee machine options for the staffroom.
Caroline recommended Nescafé FTP 120, a powerful and time-efficient machine that dispenses coffee and other beverages within 15 seconds.
Gaye was already familiar with this coffee machine as she had a demonstration at the OfficeMax showroom in Christchurch during her visit earlier in the year.
The machine dispensed various drink menu options, such as espresso, flat white, cappuccino, hot chocolate, chocomilk, and (chicken) soup, which became the most popular drink in the staffroom.

The staff loved the new addition to their kitchen. They were thrilled to see their barista-style coffee dispensed quickly and with a press of a button. Soon after the installation, word of mouth pulled more staff members from different parts of the campus to try the new coffee machine.

The Results

- Hot chocolate and chicken soup became most popular amongst the machine's wide range of coffee and beverage options.
- This new addition to the staffroom makes the staff feel appreciated, and their wellbeing is looked after.
- It encouraged staff to go to the staffroom and mingle with members of other departments.
- Cut down the mess created by manual coffee-making in the kitchen.
