Refining NZ offices get a modern upgrade with OfficeMax
Refining NZ is New Zealand’s only oil refinery, based in Ruakaka, south of Whangarei. They have a reputation as one of Asia Pacific’s safest and most reliable refineries.
As a major manufacturer focused on investing in the running of its plant, the refinery’s administration offices were looking a little dated. Work Execution Manager Steven Grylls was charged with looking after the office refit which began with the Finance and I.T. departments, made up of approximately 27 staff members.
The existing I.T. space was quite large and hidden behind a wall. Steven’s first port of call was to remove the wall and open out the space, with the ultimate goal of making it more modern and bright. Once they had plans in place for what could be done with the space and how many people could fit, Steven reached out to his OfficeMax Account Manager – Mike Webb, who in turn enlisted the assistance of Sam Taylor – Furniture Specialist.
"Sam was on hand for advice on colour schemes, she also spent time with our finance team discussing the concept with them,
which really helped them get onboard with everything.
She gave us a lot of concepts and ideas, providing a variety of designs. Nothing fazed her, she understood our goals and adjusted things accordingly."
Creating a modern work space meant removing anything that made the office look dated and adding details such as soft seating booths and filing cabinets with planters on top to add a bit of freshness.
For Steven, quality was a key objective. “As with anything, if you want quality you pay for it; and while we could have taken cheaper options, it was important to get a quality fit-out that would stand the test-of-time. Sam provided a variety of options and didn’t try to push us in any certain direction.”
The fit-out was completed on time, and everything installed promptly. The best part of the process for Steven was seeing the end product -“it’s very satisfying to know you played a part in making other people happy in their new environment.”
“Everyone absolutely loves what’s been achieved with the fit-out and even held a small opening ceremony to show our staff their new office space.
We’re now looking at the possibility of carrying the new look and feel that’s been created, through our entire office space.”
